THR reports that Paramount Pictures has picked up the rights to Red Rising, the best-selling dystopian sci-fi series written by Pierce Brown, and tapped Francis Lawrence to direct the movie adaptation.

Red Rising Movie

Described as a blend of sci-fi and Roman mythology, Red Rising “is set on Mars in a future where society is set up in a color-coded class system, with the superior Golds on top. The story centers on Darrow, a young miner who is a Red, the lowest on the ladder and a people who exist to do hard labor. After seeing his love die and discovering the truth about his existence, Darrow infiltrates the Gold society with an aim to bring it down.“

The first novel was followed by Golden Son, Morning Star, Iron Gold, Dark Age, and Light Bringer, with a seventh novel, Red God, on the way.

Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate) is writing the script for the movie. This isn’t the first time that Red Rising has been down the adaptation path. Universal tried to develop a feature film over a decade ago, but it ultimately fell through. A series adaptation was also in the works at one point, but that didn’t move forward either.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping

Of course, Francis Lawrence is no stranger to dystopian stories. He’s directed every installment of The Hunger Games franchise except the first movie. The net movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, revisits the world of Panem and follows young Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada) twenty-four years before the events of The Hunger Games, starting on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

Zada leads a cast that includes Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, and Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow. The cast also features Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, Maya Hawke as Wiress, and Lili Taylor as Mags. Ralph Fiennes also appears as a younger version of President Snow, following Tom Blythโ€™s performance as the character in The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.

Sunrise on the Reaping will hit theaters on November 20, 2027.

What do you think of Francis Lawrence directing the Red Rising movie? Do you think this one has what it takes to become a franchise?
