Along with Curry Barker’s Obsession, Kane Parsons’ Backrooms was one of the breakout hits of the year, grossing over $402 million against a $10 million budget. The liminal horror film certainly struck a chord with many, including Nicolas Cage, who recently said nothing has affected him the way Backrooms did.

Nicolas Cage on Backrooms

While speaking at Fan Expo Dallas, Cage praised Backrooms in a way only he can.

“The whole idea of what Kane Parsons did with still life in Backrooms is, that’s interesting to me,” he said. “Like, can I somehow embrace, just get the performance leading up a still shot, a still photograph, and have that moment resonate so profoundly, like the last shot in Backrooms. Which, oh my gosh, nothing has affected me the way his movie did. It’s like a de Chirico painting and M.C. Escher come to life.“

Backrooms 2

As you would expect, a Backrooms sequel is being developed at A24 with Parsons returning to direct.

Soon after the release, Parsons told Variety he would be returning to the world of Backrooms in one form or another. “Without a doubt, ‘Backrooms’ has always been planned to be more of a series that goes outside the confines of this film,” he said. “If anything, I would say this is a bit of a foot in the door that would lead to more of a progression towards the true root of the narrative, which has been set up online for years. But a version that maintains accessibility and lets this be the way in.“

Perhaps Parsons should approach Cage about entering the Backrooms…That would be something I’d love to see.

What We Thought of Backrooms

Our own Chris Bumbray found Backrooms to be a “unique piece of horror movie-making,” but added that it felt a little too long and not especially scary.

“Backrooms didnโ€™t wholly work for me, but I was intrigued enough to go along for the ride, and if A24 inevitably makes another one (based on the pre-sales, that seems like a no-brainer), Iโ€™d definitely be on board,” he wrote in his review.
