Lanterns has come to an end, but will there be a season 2 for the DC series? Although the series proved somewhat divisive among fans, it has received largely positive reviews and strong viewership numbers, yet HBO hasn’t given it an official green light. While chatting with Entertainment Weekly, Lanterns showrunner Chris Mundy spoke about how he’s feeling about a possible second season.
Will Lanterns Be Renewed for Season 2?
“You always approach these situations with assuming something’s gonna happen and not being heartbroken if it doesn’t happen,” Mundy said. “We’re all happy and proud of season 1 and mostly just happy that people seem to like it for the reasons that we intended. If there’s more, great. And if there’s not, we had our day.“
Even if Lanterns doesn’t come back for a second season, it’s not like we won’t see these characters again. We already know that Aaron Pierre has returned as John Stewart for Man of Tomorrow (as has Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner), but hopefully, we will get another season.

Another Earth-Based Story
In a separate conversation with The Ringer-Verse, Mundy said that the new season would likely be another Earth-based story, although, much like the first season, they can leave the planet on occasion.
“We won’t be back in Rushville most likely unless something crazy happens in Rushville, you know, every 10 years. But you’re going to—it’s going to be an Earth-based story that we continue most likely,” he said. “I mean, would you—we’ve shown that you can leave the planet, so that’s good, right? But because of that, we want to make whoever’s here as sort of grounded and real as possible. Our idea was just to ground everything and then layer on the other layers.”Â
Mundy added that they weren’t necessarily thinking of a second season while developing the first, but they also didn’t assume it would be a one-and-done. “We didn’t write toward platforming for our Season 2,” he said. “We always wrote assuming there would be a Season 2, you know what I mean? We didn’t think of it as a limited series. We thought of it as this is a show that’s going to keep going on, but we were just trying by the skin of our teeth to finish this season.“
He continued, “It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, we’ve got a great idea for two and three, so let’s layer in.’ Some of it is just, you take a look at what you made and what’s interesting to you and what’s useful and then you go from there. And hopefully you created characters that you could do different things with and put them in different situations.“
