Despite withering reviews, including from our own Tyler Nichols, Blumhouse’s Other Mommy is proving to be another solid hit for the studio. It’s currently coming in at about $29 million for the weekend (as per Exhibitor Relations), which is about $10 million more than we predicted. Chalk that up to one of the most effective trailers of the year, which was good enough that even without screening it for critics, who mostly savaged it, horror fans showed up.
However, the audience reaction scores are scorchingly awful, with it having a D+ rating. Ouch. Last week’s top movie, Verity, opened to a C+, and it’s sinking like a stone this week, with only a $12 million weekend. Still, with a pretty low budget, Other Mommy will be a moneymaker for Blumhouse. Resident Evil is looking at third place with $8 million, while the Brad Pitt-led Heart of the Beast is in fourth place with $7 million.
But what about the weekend’s other big opener—The Social Reckoning? It’s bombing—badly—with it looking at a $6 million weekend. That’s even worse than Digger did last weekend, although luckily for Sony, it only cost a fraction of that amount, with the reported $30 million budget keeping it from hemorrhaging too much red ink if it does okay on PVOD. Considering the opening, I’d expect it to be on streaming sooner rather than later.
Meanwhile, Digger is looking at about a 60% drop, with it on track for about $3 million, as it looks at losing somewhere in the neighborhood of $200 million. A disaster—but I stand by my notion that, in time, it will generate a decent cult following. Another new movie is Angel Studios’ Angel and the Badman with Zachary Levi, which is on track for about $2.5 million.
We’ll be back with a full wrap-up tomorrow.
