While they are set to be co-stars in the upcoming Days of Thunder 2, the box office showdown this weekend between Anne Hathaway and Tom Cruise ended in something of an anticlimax. While Digger had been expected (by us too) to have a debut in the mid-teens, the auteur-driven film crashed and burned with $8 million, tying with Primetime for fourth place.
It’s a disastrous opening for a movie with a budget rumoured to be at least $130 million, with it ironically also likely to be the final film released via Warner Bros. before the Skydance merger. It certainly seems like the kind of big swing we may not see in theaters too often going forward.
Overseas, it fared slightly better, opening with $12 million, so the global haul is now $20 million. Still, with word-of-mouth, it will likely tap out at maybe $50 million total. Not a good result for Tom Cruise, but consider it an anomaly.
Verity easily takes first place
Instead, the movie that made money this weekend was Verity, which co-stars Hathaway and Dakota Johnson. Adapted from the Colleen Hoover novel, it made $32.6 million, although it earned a pretty terrible C+ CinemaScore (the same as Digger), which doesn’t bode too well for word-of-mouth, with the movie going up against the Jessica Chastain-fronted Other Mommy next weekend.
It made nearly the same amount internationally, grossing $30 million for a $62.6 million global haul. Very good for a movie that only cost $40 million.

Resident Evil continues its strong run
Resident Evil was in second place, grossing $12.5 million for a strong $124.9 million domestic total. Overseas, it made another $16.6 million for a great $245 million global total. It should continue to make money as we get into spooky season.
In happy news, the Brad Pitt-led survival drama Heart of the Beast showed solid legs at the box office, earning $11 million, which is only a 45% decrease from last week. Overseas, it’s been a blockbuster, making another $21.5 million this weekend for a $98 million international total. Pitt is still a megastar overseas.
Primetime stumbles while Forgotten Island continues to struggle
A24’s Primetime, the Chris Hansen movie starring Robert Pattinson, stumbled 58% to $8 million (tying with Digger) and a $34 million domestic total, which is roughly twice what the movie cost to produce.
Below Digger, which was in fifth place, was DreamWorks’ expensive animated bomb Forgotten Island, which fell a steeper-than-expected 45% to $7.2 million and a $23 million domestic gross.
Endgame now the highest grossing movie ever
Avengers: Endgame – Encore had one of the steepest second-weekend declines in memory, falling 83% to $4.4 million. I suppose at this point the word is out about the new scenes and fan interest has declined. Even still, thanks to the re-release the global total has been pushed to $2.925 billion, slightly above James Cameron’s Avatar – whose gross is $2.923 billion.
The Bollywood flick Drishyam: The Conclusion made $2.7 million on only 541 screens. Meanwhile, Practical Magic 2 lost a third of its screens and ended up with a $2.6 million weekend and a $64.6 million domestic total.
The top 10 was rounded out by Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with another $2.45 million and a $954 million domestic total. And what about Lionsgate’s buzzy snake movie, Beware Bouina? It died with only $550k – total. Ouch.
